Chandler Woods Academy focuses on the importance of fundamental skills as the core to its back-to-basics approach. The staff works diligently to help students reach their greatest potential by testing and executing goals according to each student’s individual needs. One parent, after listening for six years about how “smart” her child was, expressed her gratitude when a teacher at Chandler Woods was willing to find new ways to challenge her child.
Moral guidance is also key to the educational experience at Chandler Woods. One example of this is the morning assembly in which the students and/or teachers present a moral virtue to the student body. Chandler Woods emphasizes academic excellence, high moral character, the value of learning, and discipline that centers around accountability for one’s actions. These core principles, along with many others, are the reasons why 97% of parents agree that their child’s school delivers on its promise of academic excellence and moral guidance.
One Child at a Time
Sometimes a child becomes successful academically through extra care and attention. Such was the case with one middle school student who “hated coming to school.” A literal struggle was occurring every morning between mom and son, until this year. Teachers took an interest in getting to know him. They took time to learn his strengths and spent time with him after school. His self-esteem began to rise along with his grades. He likes to come to school now, is getting higher grades than ever before, and is getting connected and involved at school.
Some of the other great success stories are not about grades at all. Hannah, an 8th grader, was very introverted and didn’t connect with friends. One would never know by looking at her, a very bright, attractive, and pleasant girl in class. Yet inside she was frustrated, lonely, and disengaged. It took a caring teacher to be able to see through the exterior, take the time to ask good questions, and challenge her to get out of her comfort zone to make friends. By following her teacher’s advice and gaining confidence from the support, Hannah is now friendly, very outgoing and happy.
“Working together with parents, we can help a child succeed in school even when it looks difficult. A boy in my class was having anger management issues and after being suspended for fighting he spent time going through counseling. I did not want to give up on him. I knew that he could be successful at our school, and so we started trying different strategies at school and at home. Everyday I talk with mom to let her know how his day was. She e-mails me if he had a bad night or morning and our communication has helped him feel loved and confident. He has friends, great grades, and no more suspensions!” - Chandler Woods Teacher
