In Middle School
At the beginning of the year, middle school students enjoy a trip that is structured around fostering relational ties among the students. The purpose of the trip is to build a tighter community in hopes for a successful school year. The 6th grade goes to Camp Henry and works on team building skills as well as individual challenges. The 7th grade goes on a canoe trip, and the 8th grade does what is called the “8th grade sneak.”
The 8th grade sneak starts with a scavenger hunt. This really creates bonds among the students, especially starting the year with new students. Playing “hot spot,” a get to know you question game, throughout the day also aides in building this community. Along the way, students have a list of things they can do to receive points. Each year holds something different in store for the group, depending on the personality of the students as a whole. The trips in 2005 and 2006 were both successful, with a great deal of bonding and fun! Parents who volunteered were amazed at the success. One parent commented, "I have never seen my son in this environment. It was great to see him interacting with the kids and just being real in conversation with them." Another added, "These kids really care about each other. It was wonderful to see them really going out of their way to get to know the new students."
